Another site links to a random URL on your site for which you have no file.

As you have no file, your server correctly returns a 404 error.

Your site logs now contain a link to their site in the referrer column of your logs. They either want you to click it so they can spam you, or else they think they now have a backlink from your site.

Are your server logs and stats public visible? Is there a page listing top referrers? If so, then this is a very old trick. Put your stats behind a password wall.
