The example on the web doesn't tell me what I need. Being new to Joomla, I need help understanding what type of module to create for each position. For example is User1 position just a Custom HTML type?

Type and position are different things. Position is place on the page and you can basically put any module in any position (of any type) .

You missed my question.

Given your example site, what are the types for each position you have created. So in the Rockin Theme, what is the type where it says Rockin in the top left corner?

What is the type of the module in in user2(upper right hand corner)?
what is the type of user1(upper left corner)?

user1 is Custom HTML (mod_custom).
user2 is menu (mod_mainmenu).

Look inside Module Manager under 'type' column.

This is what I want but I have decided to go with the Sports theme.

Can you supply this info for all positions on this template?
