Morphing different templates

We like several different modules (search, rotator, weather, etc) from several different templates and would like to join them together in a new template.

We are thinking of using the '960grid' as a skeleton to design in using Joomla 1.7

Is there a good reference to use to determine which codes to insert to make everything work?

Well probably some css tuning will be required as usual.
