is there a free update to Joomla 3.2 or do I need to pay up the membership again.
I am not clear from the newsletter which you did sent out

If you ordered any single product, you can download updated files for free. If you had a subscription which is now expired, you will need to renew it to download updated files.

This might be a dumb question but I don't build websites for a living. I have the Joomla Sports Template Hot Sportal 2.5.1. Is there a way to upgrade to 3.2 without effecting the site?

Enter Jooomla!Update in admin section. Click on Options icon. Change update server to "Short Term Support". Joomla should offer you to upgrade automatically to 3.X . You will probably need to get latest 3.x template version and overwrite template files you did not change after that update.
