Adding a module position

Hi there...
Can someone educate me as to how to add a module position? I've added it in the xml file, at the top of the index.php [$showgraphic =$this->countModules ('graphic');] and of course the module itself where I want it.

What am I missing?

Yeah..thanks, I know all that. In any case, I'm finding a way around it by hard coding it. Not what I wanted to have to do, but it'll do for now.
