Equal Heights - content area, left & right columns

I am trying to tidy up the look of my website. I would like the left column to always be the same height as the content area. And when the height of the right column exceeds the height of the main content area, then the main content area AND the left column height must adjust to be the same height as the right column. I know I can achieve this by adding in carriage returns - but would very much like it to just happen automatically. Is this possible? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you!
