Custom Fields in cosmetics template not showing up

I also noticed that we aren't able to disable the "ask a question about this product" and we can't hide the "manufacturer" on our product pages. we unchecked them in "shopfront > core settings" in virtuemart's configuration menu. can you take a look at these as well? they don't show up when we rename "default.php" to "default.tmp" so it looks like it's an issue with the cosmetics template as well. thanks for all your help!

One more function that I've noticed doesn't seem to work. The "Show call for price, when the price is empty" setting under the "pricing" tab in virtuemart "settings" doesn't seem to work unless i rename default.php to default.tmp so again it looks like this might be an issue with the cosmetics template.

here is a product that has $0 for the price but only shows the "call for pricing" when i renamed default.php to default.tmp:
