We have installed hot_hotel using the hotstart package.
Once the installation has completed we applied the Joomla 2.5.1 upgrade using the "extension manager:update"
We receive the following errors: -
JInstaller: :Install: Error SQL DB function failed with error number 1062
Duplicate entry '101-0' for key 'PRIMARY' SQL=INSERT INTO `f381l_modules_menu` (`moduleid`, `menuid`) VALUES (LAST_INSERT_ID(), 0);
SQL = INSERT INTO `#__modules_menu` (`moduleid`, `menuid`) VALUES
(LAST_INSERT_ID(), 0);
Files Update: SQL error file DB function failed with error number 1062
Duplicate entry '101-0' for key 'PRIMARY' SQL=INSERT INTO `f381l_modules_menu` (`moduleid`, `menuid`) VALUES (LAST_INSERT_ID(), 0);
SQL = INSERT INTO `#__modules_menu` (`moduleid`, `menuid`) VALUES
(LAST_INSERT_ID(), 0);
Error updating file.
Altough the site appears to fuction OK please can you tell us why we get the error and what problems may occur?
Thanks

Downloaded Joomla_2.5.1-Stable-Update_Package.zip and installed via "Extension Manager: Install"
Exactly the same error messages.
Any ideas?

Also, many users are probably concerned about complicity of the update process.
I think you mean "complexity" as the definition of "complicity" is
com·plic·i·ty/kəmˈplisitē/ Noun: The state of being involved with others in an illegal activity or wrongdoing.

I think the confusion (for me at least) regarding the update process came about because the article in your blog appears to refer to upgrading from Joomla 1.6/1.7 to Joomla 2.5 and not upgrading 2.5.0 to 2.5.1 or above.
What I have now successfully done is: -
Unzip hot_hotel25_hotstart.zip to an empty directory
Unzip Joomla_2.5.1-Stable-Update_Package.zip over the top of the above directory
Run the install (including sample data)
Open "Extension Manager: Discover"
Install "Joomla! Version Information"
Open "Extension Manager: Check Database"
The following errors appear: -
Click "Fix"Warning: Database is not up to date!
2 Database Problems Found
No default text filters found.
Database update version (1.7.3) does not match CMS version (2.5.1).
After this everything appears OK.
