in blankie template I can chose background image, if I want one big background image what size is best?

Generically small size (in kb) pattern is preferred (in this case you set repeating or x or y axis depending of what you want) , this can be like 2000px x 1px and it wold cover large monitors retining small size in kb. If you want some fancy designer background that requires one big single image over all site it depends on size of user monitor because background image is not re-sizable by default, so size in kb of that image can be enormous. If you want to have image of certain reasonable size and to re-size it to full , you can find css+javascript solutions instructions by googling.
