love this template

it is very versatile and Sparky is working much better with J3

one last thing though, how can I add a background image to the active menu item and show the image when hovering over the menu item, I tried several things but could not get it to work... is there a simple way?

Active menu item has class .active so in css you can use:

UL.menu LI.active{
...
}

and

UL.menu LI li:hover{
...
}

for hover style. Maybe you will have to use !important flag on css background property to win over default one
