Not sure if your order_done page layout was the same as an issue Ivan resolved for me but check this thread out and see if the order_done page he provided works for you. Don't know about it displaying too early.

To "hide" menu you don't actaully "hide it" simply do not show that menu module anywhere - it exists just never actually displays. So in menu asignments for that menu module make sure it never displays. Hope that helps.
No need to delete any code, featured product module does not display in my cart by doing the hidden menu item.
