sorry, how is css accessed (novice)

You can edit template css files template_css.css even from joomla directly if you go to template manager , then select second tab , then template and you will see, but probably better way becuse you can do it with some editor like notepad++ is by using FTP.
Css files are in <joomla root>/templates/<template_name>/css/
