I changed the 'header' string in jquery-1.3.2.min.js, default.php and style.css and works like a charm.

Great, but you definitely should not edit jquery-1.3.2.min.js. This is javascript library file.

the thing is that when I edited the default.php and style.css files only, it ended up with the buttons being cropped, with nothing happening when I clicked on it.
Or maybe I missed something?

I bet you edited scripts.js (you should), but not jquery-1.3.2.min.js. Right?

I am having the same problem even though mine is listed #header_hotslider? Am I doing something wrong?

Well regarding previous posts just replace:
header -> headerrotator
#header -> #headerrotator
header -> headerrotator
#header -> #headerrotator
