In this version of HotSpinner we are using background IMAGE, not color as in plain module. You can change image for background if you edit file /modules/mod_hot_spinner/tmpl/css/jquery.holest.carousel.css. There you can change line:

background:url(../../images/hot_spinner_bg.jpg);

for

background:#000000;

Change #000000 with your needed color code.
