apparently this has to be something with the virtuemart installation...

i re-installed it and it worked but the problem with prices remained, i hope theres a better solution than reinstalling but the only thing that worked for me so far..

You should try this: Find and keep file virtuemart.cfg.php of the installation that works fine. Then reinstall everything using HotStart. Finally, instead of editing virtuemart.cfg.php simply copy your correct file.

Let me know if that worked.

Hi...I'm having the same issue with the $ not working. I tried uninstalling Virtuemart and re-installing it with the file from www.virtuemart.net . That fixed the $ problem, but the layout was completely different from the hot-joomla template that I like! So, I completely took everything off my website and started with a fresh install, and we are back to the same problem of no $.

If I re-install virtuemart with the file from www.virtuemart.net , how do I get it to work and look the same? (Some of the differences were: image gallery was gone on item detail, add to cart button was different, etc.)

I fixed this problem yesterday. Like you, I took down the latest version of virtuemart from the official virtuemart site. This fixed the $ issue and other bugs with vendor, etc. But it looked different from the original hot eCommerce layout so it was no use. Replacing the virtuemart.cfg.php didn't work either. As far as I could see, this problem was related to not being able to save vendor details with currency, etc. via the "store" link in the hot eCommerce site. So what I did to resolve it was:
1. I exported the contents of the wa89g_vm_vendor and wa89g_vm_vendor_category tables from database of the site that worked correctly but didnt look right.
2. I did a fresh install of the hotstart for the hot_eCommerce site.
3. I imported the content of the of the wa89g_vm_vendor and wa89g_vm_vendor_category table in the new site.

This has fixed everything for me. I can now update store details,products, etc. at the backend without problems. And the look and feel is as it should be with the $ displaying correctly at the front end too!!
